A Trip Report from a Volunteer - 12-29-2005

Note: Jason, the writer of this trip report, had explicit permission to be on the property, helping to collect the empirical data we need. Scenic Hot Springs still remains 'posted' property.

The springs remain running at good temperatures with the exception of the lower east spring which is an astonishing low 96 degs. Also, the west springs (Bear Den Springs) are the hotter of the two, indicating a spring switch is taking place, probably because of all the rain and snow melt we've been experiencing in the last two weeks. With the new snow falling, the springs should switch back soon.

Though he talks of little snow on the property, that has changed as of today with the snow levels around 2,500 feet . . . from the FS Road on up. I expect there is a lot of snow up there by now. Thank you for your report Jason. Rick

Rick,

It was an awesome day. I did find a thermometer so we were able to take some temperatures for you. I'm not sure I found all of the spots you were looking for, but I will describe the temperatures that I did get.

  • Hot Pool: 108º
  • Cool Pool: 103º
  • West Spring ( I could only find one of the two that you mentioned): 119º
  • Rock Gully leading to the Pool (2 springs): 96º, 113º
  • Air Temp: It was approx. 34º out (much warmer than I expected, though the snow was pretty soft)
  • Winds: No or very little wind
  • Water Clarity: The hot pool was cleaner than the cool pool. Both pools had a large amount of white algae present. The liner was cleaner in the hot pool with very little algae present. (We scrubbed the liner in the hot pool at the water level where there was a little green algae present) We also were able to start siphoning and got a good chunk of white algae gone.

As for erosion, I didn't really notice any new erosion that I know of...but, there was ALOT of runoff due to the high temperatures. There was a lot less snow than what I expected and we were even walking on rocks some of the time and not snow. I'm not sure what to tell you about new erosion though, as I didn't really pay attention to the erosion the last time I was up.

All in all it was a great hike!

Jason
