I did a late afternoon trip up to the springs, arriving at the parking lot around 3:00 p.m. Temperature was 60 degrees at the trailhead. I was surprised at how quickly the snow is melting. The snow berm along Hwy. 2 is essentially gone, and there is only 1-2 feet of snow on the roads up to the trail above the power lines, with lots of bare patches along the way. Rock Alley was completely free of snow, compared with the roughly seven feet of snow just a month ago. The remainder of the trail up to the top still has 2-3 feet of snow, but it is melting quickly. The area around the pools is now completely snow free, as is the latrine trail.I took temperature readings of both pools. Bear Den was a toasty 106.6 degrees at the inlet, and 103.1 at the outlet. (Seems high compared to previous readings. Could be a faulty digital thermometer. Or does Bear Den heat up this time of year? It did feel a little hotter compared to last month.) Lobster Pot was 90.1 at the inlet, which was considerably warmer compared to a month ago. It appears to be rebounding nicely from the snowmelt. There was about an inch of grit or gravel in the bottom of the Lobster Pot pool. I siphoned it out as best I could and cleaned both pools before I left.
