On Wednesday January 6th a friend of mine and myself went to check on the state of the hot springs (my visits are always random). Snow is coming down. Especially from Wednesday through Friday there is a winter storm warning for the Cascades. There is an Owner's Event Thursday; accordingly access to the springs is not being given out. Just thought I would post a quick update, as I have been up to the springs two to three times per week for the last few months. The springs for the most part have been respected by most soakers. I have had to clean up remnants from a few fires and pick up after a few late night parties (the springs are OFF limits at night and NO fires are allowed). The springs are back at peak temperatures.

Meager Creek Hot Springs (also managed by Mike) has been open since May 15. The Forestry road is in normal conditions, it is manageable with a 2WD. An impromptu cleanup party is being held at Scenic this coming Saturday (Sep 8th, 2007). This is short notice. Some icy areas under shade. The road up to Olympic Hot Springs remains closed at the dam due to winter storms. That leaves a hike of around 14 miles round trip.There are a large number of downed trees across the trail, all navigatable. In a nutshell, the snow is melting but there is still plenty of it. FS850 is undriveble with unstable snowpack from three to six feet. Erosion on the slopes is typical for the spring melt, with a few new wrinkles but no major sliding. Snowshoes are still advised but they will go on and off, as there are plenty of bare patches.
